Courses
Courses that I teach or will teach in the future include:
CS 230 – Introduction to Agroecology
This course will examine the biological and physical attributes of farming systems and their associated ecological and social impacts in temperate and tropical regions. It will address the ecological consequences of indigenous food and fiber production systems, conventional agricultural systems and “alternative” systems that incorporate biological pest control and natural nutrient inputs. Students will examine several case studies that integrate their understanding of concepts.
Prerequisite: BIO 105 or BIO 181 or BIO/ZO 160 or BO 200 or BO 250 or HS 201 or CS 213.
GEP: Global Knowledge or GEP: Interdisciplinary Perspectives. Offered in Fall, Spring, and Summer (I will teach a section in Summer 2021)
SSC 332 – Environmental Soil Microbiology
Soil is alive! There are more organisms in a few grams of soil than there are people on the planet. These microbes are critical to ecosystem services supplied by soil and include the biogeochemical cycling of nutrients and contaminants, nutrient supply to plants, modulation of atmospheric carbon and soil organic matter, and as the driver of the soil food web. This course will provide an introduction to microbial diversity, ecology, physiology and the importance of the soil biota to soil processes, environmental quality, and agricultural productivity.
Prerequisite: SSC 200 and BIO 181, or Instructor permission.
SSC 455 – Soils, Environmental Quality, and Global Challenges
As the world population grows to 9 billion people by 2050, we will be pressed to increase food security, respond to the consequences of a changing climate, and improve human health — all while protecting the environment and maintaining natural resources. Soils play a critical role in many of these challenges. The goal of this course is to teach students how soils regulate environmental quality through a host of chemical, physical and biological processes. We will examine a series of global challenges, assess their related environmental issues and policies, and analyze the roles of soils in each issue.
Prerequisite: SSC 200 or ES 100 or Instructor permission. Offered in Fall Only – Will be offered Fall 2020
SSC 601/801 – Soil Science Seminar
SSC 609 – Soil Science Colloquium
This one hour course will be taught fall 2021 as a professional development course for CSSC Graduate Students.
